CU Anschutz Digital Collections FAQ 

The following are frequently asked questions. If your question is not answered below or if you need assistance, please contact the Strauss Library. 

 

Q: What type of resources are available in CU Anschutz Digital Collections? 

A: CU Anschutz Digital Collections content ranges from historical photographs, to electronic dissertations and theses, newsletters from the colleges and schools on campus, as well as current research outputs (e.g. posters, manuscripts, slides, datasets). Q: Do I need a login to access the content in the repository? 

A: No, most materials available in CU Anschutz Digital Collections are freely available and immediately accessible. Some materials may have an embargo restricting access, but the item will become available in the near future.   

 

Q: What do I do if I cannot access a resource? 

A: If you are having trouble accessing a resource, please contact the Strauss Library. 

 

Q: What is the creator agreeing to when they deposit their work(s)? 

A: See the Deposit Agreement for the most up-to-date terms.  

 

Q: Who can access my work(s)? 

A: CU Anschutz Digital Collections is intended to expand the scope of scholarly resources available worldwide. By default, all works submitted will be made openly accessible.  

 

Q: How will my work(s) be used? 

A: For new materials being added to CU Anschutz Digital Collections, creator(s) will have the option to choose a Creative Commons license. If the creator(s) do not choose a specific Creative Commons license the works will be made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0).   

 

Q: What are my rights for accessing and using materials from CU Anschutz Digital Collections? 

A: Copyright and licensing of materials in CU Anschutz Digital Collections vary. To determine an item's copyright and licensing, go to the item you are interested in view the “License” field. 

 

Q: Who owns the copyright of products I've created as a University of Colorado employee? 

A: Review the University of Colorado's Board of Regents Policy 5K: Policy on Intellectual Property that is Educational Material. 

 

Q: What types of data can I upload to CU Anschutz Digital Collections? 

A: Data generated by CU Anschutz researchers can be deposited to CU Anschutz Digital Collections as long as it is de-identified and contains no sensitive information. Any data type and file formats can be uploaded, according to our current storage limitations and our preservation policy. 

 

Q: How are electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) submitted to CU Anschutz Digital Collections? 

A: Theses and dissertations are submitted via the Graduate School. Upon submission, you will choose an appropriate embargo (no embargo, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years). Your ETD will be made available through the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Database as well as CU Anschutz Digital Collections. The Strauss Health Sciences Library has access to the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Abstracts & Indexes. Embargoes should not last longer than 2 years. However, in rare cases, Strauss Library will work with CU Innovation Office and the author to evaluate the request to extend an embargo. If you are an author that wishes to extend the embargo, please begin by contacting the CU Innovations Office. 

 

Q: Can I deposit previously published articles? 

A: One of the following will need to apply before you can deposit the work into the repository: 

1. You, as the author, retain copyright to your work(s) OR 

2. You have transferred your copyright ownership to the publisher; however, you have retained the right to deposit a version of your work into a digital repository OR 

3. Permission to deposit has subsequently been granted by the publisher. 

 

Q: How long will the work(s) be made available in the repository? 

A: CU Anschutz Digital Collections is committed to providing long-term access to all deposited content by applying best practices for data management and digital preservation while acknowledging the complexities involved in preserving digital information. 

 

Q: How do I submit a corrected version of an item already in the repository? 

A: We prefer that all items submitted to CU Anschutz Digital Collections are in the final stage and no further edits are required. However, if a corrected version needs to be uploaded, please contact the Strauss Library. 

 

Q: Do the works in CU Anschutz Digital Collections meet web accessibility guidelines? 

A: When submitting work(s), the content should be in the original file format (e.g. Word Doc, PowerPoint, etc.). Strauss Library reserves the right to modify the formatting of the work within the file to the extent necessary to meet these guidelines and best practices. The content of the work(s) will not be altered. Strauss Library may convert the work(s) to a PDF prior to ingesting into CU Anschutz Digital Collections.

Q: How is CU Anschutz Digital Collections improving accessibility? 

A: Strauss Library staff are constantly working towards a more inclusive, accessible environment in CU Anschutz Digital Collections to meet campus, state, and national requirements.  

For example, PDF files depositing into CU Anschutz Digital Collections are checked for accessibility. While most PDF files will be accessible to those who use assistive technology such as screen readers, some legacy PDF files may not be accessible.
